Definitions of Feminism
Without Using the Word Feminism

Definitions of Feminism Without Using the Word Feminism is a video artwork that invites viewers to contemplate the meanings and essence of feminist principles. Through a mix of provocative, cheeky and direct text-based statements on screen, definitions of feminism are provided that avoid using the word feminism. The work strives to be inclusive of diverse and intersectional perspectives of feminism.

Each statement is chosen to provoke thought and challenge preconceptions, encouraging the audience to reflect deeply on the principles that underpin the movement for gender parity. The text comprises notable quotes, random internet musings and responses collected from the public.

The deliberate omission of the word ‘feminism’ in these statements underscores the power and universality of the ideas presented without alienating potential audiences who might not typically identify as feminists. By inviting viewers to engage with these concepts, the work suggests that many may discover they inherently align with feminist values. This approach transforms the piece into a subtle yet powerful reclamation of the term ‘feminist’, illustrating that the essence of the movement transcends any single word.

Creation

The video artwork is created from text-based quotes that explore the title theme: Definitions of feminism without using the word feminism. The piece is composed of two types of quotes:

1. Existing quotes – sourced from public domains such as online platforms and published works.

2. New quotes – generated through a two-stage public engagement process.

Stage 1 - Pre-exhibition outreach: A form will be distributed to feminist groups and advocates. This outreach aims to collect initial public contributions, enriching the artwork with diverse perspectives.

Stage 2 - Interactive exhibition element: A QR code will be displayed alongside the artwork during the exhibition. Viewers will be invited to scan the code and contribute their own definitions. This interactive element allows for real-time expansion of the artwork, fostering audience engagement and participation.
